How is VOSKOS® Greek Yogurt made?

Adapting a centuries old Greek style straining process, Voskos Greek Yogurt was the first Greek yogurt to be made in and sold nationally in the United States. Voskos Greek Yogurt is high in protein, and naturally low in carbohydrates and calories. Even our non-fat Greek yogurts are naturally creamy, smooth and thick!
Hormone free milk from local dairies is delivered in special insulated milk tankers to keep it cool and fresh. When the milk arrives it is pasteurized to ensure the milk is safe. Milk is then pumped into special tanks where ’friendly’ bacteria (also known as yogurt cultures or live and active probiotic cultures) are added. This friendly bacteria ferments the lactose (the natural sugar in milk) turning it into lactic acid. The lactic acid sours the milk causing it to thicken, and form it’s the characteristic creamy texture and mildly tangy taste associated with our yogurt. Our yogurt is then cooled to a temperature where the bacteria are no longer able to grow. The yogurt is stirred and strained to make it thick and naturally creamy. For some yogurts, the yogurt is then gently mixed with fruits to make non fat fruit Greek Yogurts. The yogurt is then poured into cups and packaged ready to be enjoyed by our consumers.

What are Probiotics and Prebiotics?

Probiotics: Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that live in the digestive system. Certain probiotic cultures are added to foods like yogurts since they are beneficial in helping to maintain a healthy digestive system. Visit our Health & Wellness area and read why yogurt is a Top Health Food. Such live microorganisms include Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium bifidus, and Lactobacillus casei, which are all found in all VOSKOS yogurt. In a healthy individual the numbers of good (healthy) bacteria in the gut outweigh the bad (pathogenic) bacteria. Probiotic cultures help to promote the growth of ’good’ bacteria, shifting the balance away from the bad.
Prebiotics: Prebiotics are a form of insoluble fiber, that pass through the stomach and into the intestine intact, providing a selective food source for probiotic (good) bacteria already present.
